Some Matunga moments

Mumbai is a melting pot of different people, religions and cultures. People from all over India have settled here and foreigners too. I spent my Saturday in an area where south Indians live, and looking through my pictures, I quickly realized that I will need more than one blogpost to show you what I saw... So today let me give you just a small taste of south India in Mumbai...

A stroll at Matunga market, and especially at the flower market is a delight for all senses.. Jasmines, roses and garlands in all possible colors and those wonderful aromas. Fruit, vegetables and pottery and colorful temples. Just have a look:

Doesn't it look wonderful? It was. This was just a small taste for you... And talking about taste...

You know my love for Indian food right? so you might not be surprised to hear that I grabbed the opportunity to explore also the south Indian kitchen with both hands... Idlis, dosas, vadas... Mmmmm - Need I say more?

Stay tuned, dear reader, more Matunga moments coming up soon...

  3. Lovely photos, Eli :) It really is like a little South Indian town there. I very much enjoy visiting south Indian temples - the whole area near the temples is little town by itself. Glad you enjoyed this taste of India right there in Mumbai :)

  9. Dearest Eli,
Had first to look up what Matunga means but it is a locality in the heart of Mumbai. Also read that it is losing its Southern flavor as more Gujaratis and Jains are moving in of late...
We did work in South India for over a decade and LOVED their culture that involved a lot around fresh jasmines and such.
I think you went close to heaven on Saturday, with that abundance of jasmine flowers and other fragrant blossoms. We both were presented with such a garland for our first visit. Also using sandalwood blossoms, carved out. It really lifts up your spirits!
And oh, the food, however very spicy but we both got addicted to it. Hope you also loved it and looking forward to your next posting.
So glad you discovered this and it is one of the things I really MISS.
    Hugs,
    Mariette
